Tango en el Alma presents
The Great Milongueros
Know Where Your Tango Comes From.
A very special 3-hour workshop exploring the dancers, figures and ideas that shaped the Tango we dance today — and how understanding their legacy can transform the way you move, improvise and dance at the milonga.
Letitia Simone & Andrés Sosa
Directors of Tango en el Alma
A Very Special Topic
The Tango we dance today did not appear from nowhere. Behind the movements, figures and ideas we use every week in classes and milongas are generations of extraordinary dancers who shaped the dance.
This workshop is about understanding where your Tango comes from — who created and developed the ideas we still dance today, what made their styles distinctive, and how their legacy continues to influence modern social Tango.
Why It Can Transform Your Tango
When you understand where a movement came from, the intention behind it and how it was originally danced, you stop simply reproducing steps.
You begin to understand structure, intention, rhythm, interpretation and possibility. That deeper knowledge can change the way you improvise, the way you connect movement together and the way you express your own Tango at the milonga.
The lineage behind the dance
The Great Milongueros We Will Explore
Through stories, context, movement and practice, we will explore figures, ideas and stylistic influences associated with some of the dancers whose work continues to live in the Tango we dance today.
Mingo & Esther Pugliese
Petaca & Marta Antón
Pupi Castello & Graciela González
Gerardo & Marta Portalea
…and more, as we connect different generations, approaches and ideas across the history of social Tango.
This Is Not a History Lecture
We are going to dance it. You will learn and practise figures inspired by these great dancers, understand the principles behind them, and work on how to incorporate them naturally into your own social Tango.
Take It to the Milonga
The aim is not to collect complicated sequences. You will leave with figures, concepts and ways of thinking that you can genuinely use in social dancing — with more awareness of why they work and how to make them your own.
Know the history. Understand the movement. Transform your Tango.
